- With diabetes on the road
Sometimes an illness can produce symptoms similar to alcohol intoxication. For example, people with diabetes, during a sudden drop in blood sugar, lose contact with the outside world, reaction time is slowed. What to do when this happens while driving? Can you drive a vehicle in such a state? How to react when we witness such an event? Don't judge rashly First of all, when we see a driver on the road who loses control of the vehicle, we must take care of our own safety, that is, reduce speed, be especially careful, and when the situation requires it, stop and call the police. Secondly, if the driver has stopped, find out if he needs help. It may happen that we are dealing, for example, with a person who suffers from diabetes, has just had a heart attack or has lost consciousness due to the heat. All these health problems can cause behavior on the road similar to that of drunk drivers.
Sick or under the influence? About 3 million people suffer from diabetes in Ukraine. Its main symptom is high blood sugar. There is, however, hypoglycemia, when the blood sugar level drops very quickly. The patient in this condition loses contact with the outside world, can fall asleep in a split second or even lose consciousness. Such situations on the road are very dangerous. A person with diabetes can often be recognized by a special bracelet, which in the case of hypoglycemic attacks should facilitate assistance to such a person. It usually has the inscription 'I have diabetes' or 'If I lose consciousness, call a doctor.' Drivers with diabetes should have something sweet in their cars in case of an attack (a bottle of a sweet drink, candy).
Other causes Hypoglycemia is not the only reason for fainting. In addition, a high fever, heart attack, low blood pressure or a common cold can make the driver's behavior a safety hazard on the road. Witnesses of such dangerous events should not judge the driver's behavior superficially, but should be careful and help if necessary. A driver who is weakened and slow to react to changing situations is a danger to the road. If you feel unwell before starting a trip, you should refrain from driving in such a case. If you feel unwell while driving, the person driving the vehicle must definitely stop on the side of the road.
How to help? When we see a victim, we must help him as soon as possible. If the person is conscious, try to find out what caused the fainting, provide first aid and, if necessary,Call an ambulance. If the victim has diabetes, give him something to eat, preferably with a lot of sugar. This could be chocolate, a sweet drink, or even sugar cubes. In other cases, such as weakness due to low blood pressure or high temperature, carefully lay the victim on his back, elevate his legs, and provide access to fresh air. The main thing is not to be indifferent!
